The Magic Around Us

Growing up, my father would turn on the television on Tuesday nights to watch Otro Rollo, a Mexican comedy and variety show. It would open up the same way each time: Adal Ramones would do an opening monologue with the audience. His comedic timing and witty story telling would make us all laugh, including myself, even though I might not understand most of the obscure references. Each show would also include an interiew with celebrity stars and have some sort of musical performance by various artists.

David Copperfield was the guest star one night. He communicated with a transalator and preformed magical illusions for the audience. I still remember how mezmorized I was when he made the audience dissapeared. Growing up meant learning about camera tricks and accepting that’s what it all was: tricks. That still didn’t stop me from watching his magic show specials on YouTube.

Magic in video games was so much cooler. You could actually make things dissapear, explode, or levitate with the press of a button. World of Warcraft and Runescape was such a fun passtime. In Dungeons and Dragons you have the usual spellcasters like Wizards, but one that always caught my attention was the Bard. The Bard is able to cast spells with the power of music. They play their instruments to do all of the things I’ve mentioned, but they had a special knack for casting spells like Calm Emotions, Friends, or Charm Person. Being able to impact a person’s emotion with magic is somewhat poetic..

Music is one of the closest things we have to real magic. Music is such a powerful form of art. A song can elevate someone to happieness or break you down to tears. Music can be felt through the body. Someone has to write, program, or play an intstrument to create sound. Sound must be created and can be manipulated. That sound can then make a person feel an emotion involentary. How is that not witchcraft?
